Default NWMECS 2019 Championship

The deciding race for the Northwest Mini Enduro Championship Series was run yesterday at PIR in the 2 hour portion of the Cascade Festival of Endurance. It was a day of sometimes rain with partly sunny skies. That makes for a special challenge in racing skills to recognize the changes before they bite you.

The race attracted some pro level teams we don't see in our NW ICSCC racing. There were three prototypes and a Mercedes AMG FIA GT4 car. The AMG is a factory built race car for the FIA GT4 group of races. He came complete with German mechanics. Absolutely beautiful and a marvel of engineering. He was smoking fast, almost as fast as the prototypes, and in our class!

The track was cold and wet for the start. First driver in was my friend Chris from Retro Racing. He would drive the first hour, then I would hop in for the second, take the 2 Hour checkered flag, then swap for another of Retro's driver for hour 3 then back to me for the fourth hour. Endurance racing rarely goes by plan.

There were several cars that lost it in the cold & wet and crashed into the wall. One driver was injured badly enough to be transported to the hospital. (It was his 3rd or 4th concussion. Probably the end of his racing if he's smart.)

Unfortunately the AMG GT4 was one of the drivers who needs more practice racing in the rain. $300K race car, $100K in bespoke composite damage.

At the end of the two hour I had collected enough series points to win the NWMECS championship and was presented our trophy:

A couple of pics of us getting ready for the LeMans style start:

..

The black car next to us is our race partners at Retro Racing from BC, it's a Miata with a turbocharged Honda K24. And just beyond them you can see the silver AMG GT4.

Refueling Action:

At 3 + hours into the 4 hour the left rear wheel bearing gave up and that was the end of our racing for the day. Apparently I need to change all the wheel bearings every 3 races instead of once a season.

Next year I'm hoping to run our Subaru powered 818 in fair weather and keep the STI for bad weather. The 818 should be a lot less expensive to operate.

I want to thank our Tier 1 sponsor Subaru of Bend for their support. It's great to win a championship with them!

I also want to thank our tuners and fabricators, ArcFlash in Bend, and Surgeline in Portland.

And a shout out for Boxkita from the Legacy GT forum for coming down to Portland to be our Crew Chief, many thanks!

Congratulations! That is no easy feat. And, I can't say I'm not surprised with the AMG driver

It's hard for people to understand the amount of effort that goes into endurance racing preparation especially at the level your STi is. Really nice work and keep on keeping on!

Just saw this thread.

Awesome to see the development!

When do you run again? I'm local to Pacific Raceways and would love to come see the car

Thanks. You're right, endurance racing has it's own prep and planning levels that other racing like AutoX and Time Attack don't have. Rally is similar though. I do love the team atmosphere of a pit crew and more than one driver coming together to win a race. And the big benefit for me personally is my driving gets better all the time because I try to put multi championship level drivers in my car to share the driving in a race. Nothing like having the same car, same tires, same weather, for learning why one driver is a couple of seconds faster than you are....it's also humbling and you better be willing to check your ego at the door to the data review session. Then we pull the Video Vbox data and see where we both could go faster by comparing our best laps turn for turn, brake zone for brake zone. It's truly astonishing the revolution in driver performance that kind of data is bringing to the sport.

I see the Time Attack guys trying to figure out how not to overheat oil & coolant in 5 laps. In 5 laps our tires are just up to temp! I've learned a lot from them pushing the envelope, particularly their aero work. I hope the work we are doing on oil control/temps will help them and everyone with a dedicated Subaru powered track car. More on that next year!

ICSCC (known as Conference in the NW) is done for 2019, the 2020 schedule won't be out till next February or so. We usuually have two races at Pacific and one race at The Ridge (Shelton WA) every year. Next year I'll probably run the STI in only the foul weather races and run the Factory Five 818R for the good weather Enduros and Sprints. It *should* be a lot less expensive to operate. But no 818s have run a full racing season yet so it's still an unknown factor for sure. I'll be posting here a week or two before each race on what our plans are. We can always use more crew!

The ICSCC 2020 schedule is up here: https://www.icscc.com/season.php

Arcflash is also considering building a shop NA Imprezza for Lucky Dog Racing, so I'll probably be driving that a lot too in NW races.

Come on out for some fun!

Default STI Test No Power Steering

ORP was finally open last weekend from the COVID shutdown for very limited testing. We had the STI and the 818R out for their first sunshine since last fall!

We removed the power steering and welded up the quill over the winter, this is the first test session.

The Pros: the road feel was incredible, every tiny change in the road surface was transmitted directly to the steering wheel. And as the weight shifted from braking, acceleration, and turning, I could really feel the change in the wheel. As the car crested the hills the instant feedback of the front wheels lack of traction was great.

The Cons: With big R comp tires and aero downforce it is a major workout. To make smooth turns I had to anticipate each one in advance and be ready to apply brute force. Instant major line corrections were very difficult. I can probably handle it for a 30 min sprint session but a 2 hour enduro would be a killer. Some of the folks who share the enduros with me couldn't possibly have the strength for even 30 minutes.

The Decider: Twice going into Turn 13 a seam in the track I was crossing under braking grabbed the front tires and spun them to the right, while I'm setting up to turn left! I flatspotted two sets of front tires trying to keep from going off the track and down a ravine. So the no P/S was an interesting experiment but we will be re-installing a power steering system.

So not sure what you used previously for powersteering but one thing I have always liked is the feel of a manual rack, but that as you mentioned requires a specific balance to everything to be manageable over a longer stint.

I went to a remote powersteering pump on my '04, what I liked was with it being an electric pump you can effectively wire it to provide a variable amount of pump power to make it feel and be less assisted. I did also add a quickener to the steering column so that added some resistance so it could have played a role in how much I enjoy the feel. Just something to think about if your going back to powersteering.

Thanks Scuby. Do you have more detail in a build thread or can you provide them here? We are looking at using an electric pump. We are trying to figure out if we can use the quicker ratio STI electric off the newer models.
Thanks.

You can use a volvo pump we have a local who has it on his Forester XT

You can use the 2015 + rack or use a rack from PRS that will bolt right in

Awesome thread Sgt. Gator, congrats on the success. Hearing your thoughts on P/S is reaffirming. I've always believed it's the perfect relief to driver fatigue, which in turn allows us to maintain focus on other things, hence I've vowed to never get rid of it.

Yeah I have a build thread in members cars, but there are a LOT of options for pumps. People like mr2 pumps a lot and they are readily available. I got something I wouldn't buy again simply because the noise level it has.

But the thing I never get is why people don't just do a column quickener over s full on rack replacement? It was relatively cheap to add a 1.5 ratio quickener.

The Volvo- Ford pump looks like the one we'll use. Plus re-install the P/S cooler. We may put it int passenger compartment or all the way back in the trunk.
Thanks for all your inputs!

I went for the trunk option. I am leaning towards tossing my radiator back there too just for balance.

I think it was a good route to go given my goals, plus I am really looking forward to what things will look like once I am able to remove the engine mounted unit.

Nothing to add about power steering or lack thereof, but man, ORP looks fun interesting! A few of those corners were looking pretty banked!

280 feet of elevation change in 2.3 miles. And the corners with the banking you mention (T9 &T10) are named the Half Pipe. Sometimes it's fun not to run the classic racing line clipping the apexes but rather to run up on the banks. Most any car even with all season tires can exceed 1G of lateral acceleration doing that. Great fun!

Blind corners, off camber corners, banked corners, hairpins, high speed sweepers, it has them all. And it's one of the few tracks designed to be run in both directions. On a typical HPDE weekend one day we run it clockwise, the next day counterclockwise.

The only thing it lacks is a really long straight. For that we have other tracks in the NW, Spokane being the longest.

If you find yourself in the NW let me know and we'll get you on track there in your own car or one of the rental race cars.

Here's the same weekend doing a test & tune in our 818R, EJ207 detuned. No power steering, no power brakes, 209 HP, open top. The contrast between the two Subaru powered cars couldn't be any starker:

Sorry for the long delay on updates. We've been concentrating on the 818R, which is another long story which I should probably start a thread on here in NASIOC, but for now if you are interested it's in the Factory Five Forums.

I'd be especially grateful if any of y'all can diagnose what the heck is going on with my oil pressure/ oil temps since we swapped out my damaged JDM EJ 2.0L for a 2017 STI USDM 2.5 L.

The thread is here, feel free to skip up to the last page! https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/show...4-Gator-s-818R

Back to the STI: We are moving forward with the 2015+ power steering rack + a Mooresport front subframe and Volvo remote pump.

I'm a little disappointed that the boots on the P/S rack very slightly rub on the Mooresport frame. W'll have to watch them closely for wear thru. I'll post a pic of the issue next post.

I think your diagnosis of the oil bypass being hung up is right. Full open, you'd still see some oil pressure since the pump can output more than the bypass can handle at higher rpm. Full closed and it'd pop some oil seals with how high the pressure would get. I'm not familiar with the lines you're talking about so I'm guessing there's some sort of oil lines to the pump? Either way, swapping another 10mm pump on with a well inspected bypass would be my first step.

It being fine for a warm up lap then going off the rails after tells me it's related to heat. I didn't look closely at the data, but since you have it, does it go weird at the same general heat range? The fact it returns to normal at "normal" oil temps says it's nothing in the bottom end as well.

Regarding the power steering, I had issues with electric over hydraulic pumps in the trunk on a quick rack, and the Evo guys I know that tried it also had issues with it mounted in the trunk. Mounted in the engine bay seems to work better, but the pumps weren't designed for the flow requirements a quicker ratio rack requires. It might work ok, but test it with quick back and forth motions to see. If it cuts out, move the pump. Despite it going against common sense that the signal from the rack to the pump should be "instant" since hydraulic fluid doesn't compress, there is some slight delay in the pump supplying what's needed, or just an overall disparity of flow. I even modified a volvo pump to increase flow and pressure while also forcing it to run full time and it wasn't enough on an 11.5 rack. A friend of mine did it on an Evo 13:1 and while it was better, it still wasn't enough to not cut out in the middle of a slalom. On 15:1 racks it was fine.

Yes, It's a dry sump system, two scavenge lines to the DS pump, one line to the tank from the DS pump, one line from the tank back to the OEM pressure pump. The lines are new Brown & Miller Racing lines, very high quality stuff.

Either way, swapping another 10mm pump on with a well inspected bypass would be my first step.

It has the oem 11mm pump from the 257 on it now. That could be part of the problem. I have a new upgraded 10mm pump from a guy I met at PRI on the way now. More on that soon.

Friday was very clear change at 192 F. Sunday it started getting a little goofy at 176 F, then stabilized for a very short period, then went consistently bad at 189 F. It does seem to be heat related.

Thanks for your input on that. We are mounting the pump on the passenger floorboard with direct lines to the rack. It will be a very short distance and also much cooler than in the engine compartment. That's good to know bout the trunk length issue.

Thanks for your help!
