redid the lamin-x on my headlights today. old stuff had about 100k on them, the lights underneath still look flawless as expected. new stuff installed and good for another 100k. looking forward to better light when driving in the dark

would last even longer but my car isn't garaged

thanks for the info. is this one model compatible with both sides (left and right)? this guys seems about the same price as the Subaru ones, but i also see Monroe and other typical brands more in the $25 range... now i'm debating about what to do

That’s a protectant film I take it? I had an old bmw with some thick plastic pieces over the headlights, they started peeling off so I removed them and the 20 year old headlights looked brand new underneath.

I’ll have to try some, my lights are fd bad since my car was from Florida and it’s pretty apparent it was left outside, hazy as crap on the top of the lights but the rears are immaculate, I should probably get new headlight housings.

Yes, protective film. I swear by it after trying it years ago. Its on all my vehicles currently, but my impreza while not the longest has been outside the most. Our odyssey has over 150k on the film and it still looks fantastic, but it is garaged and has projectors so i think not subject to same heat.

50.00 usually when you can get it on sale and it is well worth it. New OEM housings cost me 600 4yrs ago after i hit a pheasant. But same story there, pulled the film off the undamaged light and it was flawless

Surely you could open it up and give it a good cleaning?

Did it a couple times when projector retrofitting.

It’s UV damage on the outside of the housing, I could sand them down and spray them but they work fine enough and I don’t drive at night much anymore.

I don’t care about the car enough to do that right now not enough free time for me.

Guess I could have Googled what the "haze" is exactly. Not something that can simply be cleaned it seems.

follow up and mea culpa. i looked back at this again and realized the price was for a pair...so i just ordered a set. free shipping in CA ground so that's another bonus for me.

looking forward to not having to force my gate up and/or bang my head on the hatch every time i open it.

Sorry for not getting back to you - I got sick of hitting my head too. The ones I got from them open up the hatch fast - and with force. Hope they work out well for you!

1. old vinyl (headlight armor brand) pulled partially back to show the plastic is still perfect, 100k or so on these lights
2. new Lamin-x brand vinyl. my lights are very bright again at night. it is amazing how just that little haze and pitting on the old really degraded my light output

thanks to Angelus911's rec, i ordered these and finally got around to installing them this weekend. here are some comments that might be helpful to anyone else considering swapping theirs out:

- the instructions provided by liftsuppportdepot doesn't really apply to the Subaru. there is no clip nor easy way to remove the ball from the socket on the original strut. one needs to remove the entire strut with the ball in the socket attached. i failed to notice until later that they actually provided an entire new "ball" to thread into the hatch. my friend and had actually used a grinder to remove the ball from the socket on the original (thinking we had to preserve the ball) and i noticed the ball in the bag afterward. anyway, after realizing this, it was an easy job.

- as Angelus noted, the replacement struts are much stronger than the original...now, after opening the hatch partway, the hatch rises up and actually "thunks" at the end of its travel the struts are so strong. the originals, when the car was new, i think were much quieter in this regard. but on the flip side, after probably 4-5 years, my hatch failed to open fully unless i forced it to the fully open position. (i can't be believe i've lived with this for the past 3+ years). also, the hatch is a little harder to close now (not a big deal, but something that my wife may notice when she uses my car from time to time)

in the end, i'm happy with the end result. it's nice to have the hatch work properly so i don't bang my head if i forget to raise it fully by hand.

thanks for the rec Angelus!

So I’ve always heard a lot of people complain about not getting close to the advertised mpg with these cars.

I got a new job recently so my commute has changed drastically and I’ll post how this has affected my gas mileage.

Old commute: 40min cruise at 65mph. 2 stop lights on the entire trip.
Mpg ~35-36

New commute : 15min of city driving.
Mpg : 22

When I was doing mainly 65 and some city my mpg was about 32-33.

Pretty crazy how much it can change based on conditions.

I’m sure at 75-80 it would be close or under 30 as well.

Lifetime on my car is like 27.7mpg that’s mostly a 75/25 split of 75-85mph/and city

If i have a pure highway trip i plan on 31 if sub 75 and 28 if 80mph.

i am getting around 29 mpg lifetime after accounting for the 3% error in odometer (i'm at 27.9 on Fuelly using raw data).

I have found this care is extremely sensitive to the following:
- hills
- high speed on highways
- short trips since it takes a long time for engine oil to fully come up to temp.

my best tank was just under 40mpg... that was averaging around 60-65mph on the highway.

i rarely drive over 75mph, but for a 75mph average, i see around 32-33mpg.

I’ve noticed 60-65 seems to be the sweet spot.

I noticed moving to a higher elevation (and lower octane gas) increased my MPG a bit. Working from home, my main "commute" nowadays is the occasional trip to the Denver airport. On the way there I know I'm dropping in elevation, so I can get well over 40mpg. I make up for that on the return though, usually ending in the mid 30s. Mostly highway, albeit higher speeds than the east coast, normally 80 ish but with construction now it's more like 65.

The computed MPG is definitely optimistic though, by at least 2-3 MPG when I last ran a tank and checked.

Boy, if I thought 148hp wasn't much at sea level, it's killing me a mile above!

So in a weird chain of events...figured out that my rydeen duo backup camera i put in almost 6 be years ago, started dying about a year ago and along the way messed up my tmps/keyfob module and my remote start. New natika hd camera arrived today. Wider viewable range, hd resolution, and better night vision specs. Excited to install this weekend. It's amazing how dependant you get on a backup camera

for me, the 148hp has been sufficient both at sea level, and tolerable at elevation (Sierras) as long as there are only 2 adults in the car (+ one small child)...if there are 4 adults, the car is very sluggish.

i too have found the computer about 2mpg optimistic on average. but as i noted above, the odometer is off. so, Fuelly (using raw distances and gallons purchased) gives me a lifetime of 27.9mpg, the computer shows 29.7mpg, but in reality, it's right in between those. so the computer is about 1mpg optimistic in reality.

Default 2 days with 2019 Limited Hatchback...

So, i finally decided to allow Subaru to do my Valve Spring recall work and they gave me a 2019 Limited hatchback with roof rails and cross bars so it's a functional equivalent of my 2012 (which is a Limited with Crossbars installed).

i've noticed a lot of small changes which amount to a much improved car. it may be hard to go back to my own car once the work is done:

- the CVT is much smoother and better behaved.
- the throttle and response is much better when the car is cool in the morning: i won't say cold since my car is always garaged in CA, but this 2019 just drives better in the first few minutes after starting up overnight.
- the slightly more responsive steering is noticeable (ie, i don't have to turn the wheel quite as much on the 2019 for the same turn)
- it *must* be a function of the CVT improvements and how they tuned the throttle, but the car feels better and more responsive off the line compared to my 2012 even when fully warmed up. i doubt the 2019 will beat the 2012 in any noticeable way in a 0-60 timing, but it just feels more peppy.
- i *love* the three displays in the car and how customizable they are. its nice to have the option to see the oil and water temp and confirm my suspicions that those 5 quarts of oil take a while to come up to temp.
- i really like CarPlay on this car and how maps integrate. it has me thinking that if i plan to keep my 2012 for 4-5 more years, it might be worth considering getting an aftermarket unit for my car. does anyone know if there are reliable harnesses that allow full steering wheel controls and also use of the USB port in the armrest/center console? [would like to continue use of an old iPod (actually iPhone in my case) for music via this USB port]
- i like the keyless entry (no need to pull out fob)

Other stuff:
- i'm not so convinced that the car is that much quieter than my 2012. insulation may be slightly better but road noise with the factory tires not the 2019 is very noticeable on a lot of the rough roads in the SF Bay Area.
- if i bought one, i would definitely want the blind spot detection feature which for me, is more important than the lane assist. this is the one thing i like to have when i occasionally drive my wife's Honda CR-V.
- as small the difference might seem, i would miss the 14.5gal vs 13.2 gal gas tank capacity.

Is the gas mileage pretty similar?

Also was either a sport trim?

I not sure if they tune or setup the cvt differently on the sport model or not

not sure if i have enough data on gas mileage, but in my limited driving (100mi), i think its comparable. its supposed to be a few MPGs higher, but hard to tell without driving for extended time.

both my vehicle and this one are the Limited trim, not Sport.

i am guessing they have tuned the CVT differently in this generation. i continue to be impressed by how it behaves both when cold (first 5 minutes of driving) and also when warmed up. they seem to have focused on giving the driver a sense of smoother power off the line. like i said before, i don't think the 2019 has been proven to be any faster than my 2012 in 0-60 and quarter mile times, but this car just feels more responsive than my 2012 (in a less effort kind of way).

i'm getting to be quite fond of this car and it will actually be an adjustment going back to my 2012 when i get it back. that's rarely the case with car rentals and loaners for me (i've previously been loaned a Forester and Legacy sedan in other Subaru dealer work).

the car feels very familiar, yet improved.

hard to justify trading up though as my 2012 is still driving well (assuming they don't screw up this valve spring recall!) and should continue doing so for at least 5 more years (i have only 82k on the odometer).

My sport 12’ seems pretty zippy, some people might call it jerky but if you put your foot down like 1cm on the throttle it gives you a jolt forward.

Not sure if this is only on the sport model or just how the trans is.

I’m actually really happy with the performance of the cvt so far, no complaints.

i've driven a friend's '13 Sport (it was a few years ago) and i don't think your '12 Sport's throttle is any different than my '12 Limited.

i don't think the '12 is jerky, but things just seem smoother when i give it a good punch on the throttle. as i said before, i doubt the '19 would be any faster 0-60 or 1/4mi racing...

yet, one obvious difference is how they handled the warm up phase of the car. i absolutely hate the way the throttle behaves when the car is "cold." the '19 revs higher at idle, but drives much more smoothly under acceleration those first few minutes of "warm up."

my '12 is zippy enough...the '19 just feels a little more refined.

for a wild comparison: my wife's '18 Honda CR-V has a much quicker 0-60, but it's a slug on initial acceleration, but then it really gets going after a bit of a lackluster first step off the line. my '12 feels faster at first, but having driven both enough, i know that if i really needed to get up to highway speed quickly, slapping the CR-V into Sport mode would give a much quicker start and it would be much faster to 60 than my Impreza.

i guess my point is, i like how they "tuned" the CVT and throttle on the '19 a lot.

anyway, sorry to clutter this thread with all my drivel here... bottom line is i like the 2019 and all the improvements made the next generation add to a nicely updated car. can't complain about my 2012. it's given me 8 years of good service and i hope to get at least 5 more.
