My TV has Android TV and cast built in. However, the built in cast is not the same as the dongle. It can't do all the same functions like turning on the TV.

I can ask Google Home or cast from my phone to YouTube or Netflix and it will turn on the TV and play the app. But, I can't just say to Home, "turn on the TV." I think the app is doing all the work. No app, no work. My guess anyway.

So gawd dammit, I downloaded about 25 SACDs and only 2 of the ****ers play correctly for me on the 203. Luckily the 2 that do play are Pink Floyd DSotM and Wish You Were Here.

The rest including some FLAC files will only play audio from my rear surrounds.

Anyone care to be a pal and dl an SACD and see if you have the same results? I'm not sure if it is my setup or the actual rips.. Although I don't see any negative comments for these torrents that would lead me to believe there is an issue with the rips themselves..

I pirated these if someone cares to test -

The Eagles - Hotel Cali

Boston - Boston

Holy balls.. I am a dumb ass.. Somehow I had the Front L/R going into the Surround L/R on my receiver and vice versa. Also, most of these SACDs I pirated is simply the Stereo portion. Not the 5.1(aside from Pink Floyd) which is fine. It's free so cannot complain about hi-res stereo music. So that is why they were only playing out of 2 speakers and why those 2 speakers were my surrounds

I was wondering why I had to turn down the levels on the surrounds for Thor Ragnorok and the Pink Floyd SACDs /facepalm

Yup

I kind of figured once my FLAC files were playing from my surrounds that things were amiss and clearly not just issues with the pirated SACDs.. But thought for sure I would have noticed something wrong while watching movies.. I guess not. My eureka moment was during troubleshooting 101 and plopping in an "old school" CD to listen too and it played from the surrounds as well. Then I knew I hooked my **** up wrong

The Linkin Park Reanimation DVDA is great. I could only listen to it tonight at a low-ish volume, and not always in the room (kids and such) but it felt like it was really *produced* and not just recorded.

Best was that it made use of the bass/sub channel, which generally sucks when you have a theater system and you're listening to music. The bass is never right.

Bummer that more music wasn't produced for surround, but it's definitely cool. I have the Metallica Black Album also, and AC/DC Back in Black on the way. DSotM is on my wish list, hah.

If anything it further adds to my need for a better center speaker.

The Denon tech told me that the Multi Channel was 2 sets of stereo for front and back. Not a 5.1 selection. ???

Since I converted the TCL TV and the Denon receiver to ARC, I was unable to get my satellite box to select anything other than Dolby digital. Dish guy showed me how to turn off the Dolby Digital default and now I get the full menu of PLXII (5.1) - Neo6 -etc. I'm re-watching the "Borgias" just because the pic and sound are fantastic. Hot sex and violence not withstanding.

I also need a much better Center Channel Speaker also to go w/my spendy [for me] Front speakers.

I use the Neo 6 setting which is technically for a 6.1 setup [and less center speaker centric than PLXII] but I think the Denon compensated for no "Back speaker" when I ran the auto setup w/out a bk spkr. Back speaker channel is shared thru the rear surrounds. I think ;-] It sure sounds like it.

The 5.1 MC portion of SACD and DVDA is 5 discrete channels plus LFE. Not sure where the Denon tech ever got that info.

Why use PLII when you have full DD available?

Finally got to crank the LP DVD with a few drinks and just close my eyes for a while.

Was really an experience. This disc has the videos on it also, but those are stereo. Creating videos that would go along with the surround productions would have been awesome, like mini-movies.

I can't wait for the others to get here, and when I can find the time to start making some must have SACD lists.

What I'd really like to start researching is whether there were any Trance/Electronica DVDA or SACDs produced. I didn't see any when going through some DVDA lists, but maybe there's some SACD. Seems like the perfect production method for electronic music.

Indeed. Since I got the TCL TV with ARC, I've been trying to dial in the best sound field for Movies, etc.

The Dishnet box had the default set to Dolby Digital and I could not experiment with the other sound fields. I'm still playing around.

Right now I am using the neo 6 Music format for movies. My Center speaker is so pronounced it bugs me as I am very close to my speakers.

What do you have your system set to for movies then CD listening?? What setting do most of us use?

Clarification??
The TCL goes thru the Denon via ARC and I play CD's with the BD player also thru the Denon.

I've seen the settting in audio adjust that I think will spread the center soundfield partially to the front speakers [I think]. Haven't tried it though.

PS: the picture and sound quality using the TLC ARC is much better than going thru the dish box.

Not sure if here or the IT thread is best place for this:

When I stream a local video file from my plex server to my chromecast I often get video stutter (plays for a second, pauses for a instant, plays for a second, pauses, and so on). The weird thing is that if I have a 1080p source video, I can play it no problem at 4Mb/s 720p stream to chromecast which requires the server to transcode on the fly so I *think* that should rule out the server hardware not being able to keep up. But, if I stream to my phone or tablet I can stream at original quality which in one case was almost 20Mb/s or any variation that I have tried without any issues. So this points to the chromecast device in my simple mind. It's a chromecast v2 that supports 4k streaming so I would think it should be able to keep up with pretty much any bitrate that a 1080p video stream could throw at it. Is there any way the HDMI port/TV hardware that it's connected to could play into this?

Edit: is there any Android software/app that can interrogate the Chromecast to see stream info or statistics?

Try the Chromecast wired.

Just to be sure that it's not Plex (doesn't sound like it), turn on verbose logging on the general settings screen. Open up the log and find your speed. If it's at 1 then you are transcoding realtime. If it's under 1 you can't keep up. If it's over 1.3ish or so then you should never have issues.

Welp, I just got back from Magnolia and I am officially a UDP-205 owner Had to deal with some BS as outlined in the 4k thread. But overall it was worth it for $100 off an already excellent value.

My POS Onkyo TX-SR606 appears to have **** the bed. The wife heard a pop through the speakers, there was a distinct burning smell and the receiver goes into 'protect mode' a few seconds after turning on. I did some Googling and troubleshooting but no dice. I unplugged all of the speakers and turned it on and had the same result, so it's not the speakers or a wire, which I didn't think it would be anyways. Resetting it with a 'Clear' also does nothing. Consensus for this problem looks like it's toasted and the cost to repair isn't worth it. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them since it's been fine otherwise and performs the basic task of running sound from the TV to the 7.1 system.

If it's time to replace it, what do you guys recommend and what features should I be looking for? I'm not an audiophile, I just want something with some good bump to replace this busted receiver. Right now I have a 7.1 setup and just a 4k TV running through it, no other devices (no Xbox, BluRay, etc) but who knows what I'll have in the future, but it won't be a crazy setup with lots of devices is my point. I don't need anything fancy but I would like to have some future-proofing considering I have a 4k TV and I found this decade-old Onkyo was lacking some stuff that's pretty standard nowadays.

Below $500 ideally.

I didn't think I'd use Denon's Heos features at all when I bought my x4300h, but I've since grown quite fond of it's abilities. Being able to build a playlist queue via multiple devices on the fly has been a really welcome feature in social situations at my house.

Wait till next years if you can wait for HDMI 2.1 compliant receivers perhaps?

Otherwise plenty of deals out there.

I got mine for $433 delivered.

Best buy has some good deals out there.

Look at avsforum and then also slickdeals.

Future proofing, as long as you have Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.. you're covered.

Hmm, Top Gear top tip. This is the first I've heard of HDMI 2.1 but it sounds like a nice feature to have, although I don't know if I'll want to wait a year using the stock TV speakers (third first world problems). Prices are kind of out the window since goods are expensive here, but it is what it is. I'm tentative to get another Onkyo after this one crapped out on me, although it is 10 years old.
