Default We need a platform agnostic electric car thread

So here it is.

The options are becoming pretty good these days, so let's compare via sabre rattling and the like.

Obviously the Model S and X are out and doing fine.

Chevy's Bolt is coming very soon

Hyundai has an all electric version of the Ioniq which actually looks pretty interesting.

There's the i3, as ugly as it is, kinda neat

Ford may or may not have something all electric these days. Same with VW. I feel like those two are very limited by region though.

So who here has an EV and who wants one? Personally I want one within the next six months or so. While I love my X5, I would rather have something where I don't ever have to stop at a gas station.

I felt like the Model 3 was for me, but I'm not convinced Tesla is going to succeed at making a reliable mass market car, since they couldn't even make a reliable low-volume car. Chevy's Bolt intrigues me a lot, as does the Ioniq, but I hate FWD cars on principal alone.

Carry on

Also the Mitsubishi iMiev and Soul "e"

The iMiev is basically a golf car with airbags, the Soul actually manages to remain a real car even though it's a conversion (very well done, it only looks like a Soul, most of the car is unique)

Edit: iMiev is mid motor and RWD. It's basically a well thought out 911

I would 100% LEAF again. That car was just great in a close-in suburb.

When the lease is up on our current car (Dec 2018) I expect we'll look at the electric market again. Model S, Model 3 (if they do something about the terrible trunk), and LEAF would be the main contenders for us.

Yep, a used Leaf is high on our list.

What's the depreciation like on Teslas and the like?

Unrelated note saw a Fisker over the weekend. Still such a beautiful car, just too bad about the rest of it.

We have a Leaf and love it. Even though it pollutes more than a fleet of Hummers.

man, I just hate the Leaf. I think it's super ugly plus it's range is unbelievably poor.

At this point I'm leaning Ioniq, depending on how the numbers work out. I know I wouldn't get a Model 3 until probably late 2018 at this point, and my X5 warranty runs out in feb 2017, so a 2-3 year lease on the Ioniq would work. ~150 miles is enough to get me to work and hockey in a day plus some. Plus, long-ass warranty and it's got some good interior bits

I believe so, but last I checked, they're only available in CARB states.

Why do you care about a long-ass warranty if you are leasing?

The Gen2 Leaf is supposed to have over 200 mile range.

eGolf here, have been very happy with it (actually MKVII #2 in the fleet). I wish the A3 eTron was available at the time I was shopping, would have seriously considered that as an option even though it's a plugin hybrid and not an EV.

That being said, I seriously considered a Model X. There were a number of things I could not get past:
  • Sure, 270+ miles is good. Still, if i want to drive to LA I don't want to be out of commission for hours at a time. If I want a daily beater/low mileage range, I already have a fairly luxurious EV for less than my monthly mobile bill.
  • Shortage + waitlist = not my cup of tea. I'm all about instant gratification.
  • Any Tesla is sort of a Camry here. They're a dime a dozen. Definitely not alluring to me.
  • I cannot bring myself to purchase an EV at this time. It's nearly as bad as PC hardware in the obsolescence. Lease options were not available when i was shopping.
  • The differences between the numbers/letters = unappealing. There's a reason my first Subie was an STI and my first BMW was an M. Aside from paper specs and a letter difference, there is almost zero difference between the P/D and base models. Throw something on it, a spoiler, some unpainted carbon fiber. Doesn't have to be flashy, just something more for the egoist.

You must drive long distances, then. Even on "busy" driving days around town we never come close to running out of charge. Drive up to ~90 miles/day, charge in garage, rinse, repeat.

I don't know what the point of long range EVs is for 99% of trips for most people in most cities, long commutes or other long driving distances, aside.

I thought real world was more like 70 miles or so on the Leaf. But really, it's so ugly I've really never considered it and thus done no research on it.

But I do live in Austin, which is a very large city. So if in one day I have to go to work and then to hockey at the "far" rink, I'm looking at a day of just over 100 miles of driving.

I would like a model 3, but I want to wait a bit to make sure everything is worked out, real world battery life well understood preferably with the hot swap battery pack stations from tesla available, and then buy a proven model used, so I have a 2016 civic (with 6spd MT) to drive for a few years until such a vehicle is available.

Yeah, may not be practical then. Driving conservatively I can get 100 miles out of a full charge, but that may be pushing it in your case. It's not a pretty car but damn it works well.

I would say worst-case on my 2013 LEAF was 70 miles. That means in the winter, blasting the heat, over 65MPH on the highway.

I would want to trickle-charge at work if I had to do a true 100 miles per day.

I'm a little shocked there's no charging stations in my parking garage here. Maybe in a few years, but who knows. But yeah, ideally if there were chargers at work, then range REALLY wouldn't be much of an issue even for the "worst" performers.

Indeed. I would likely lease, unless the mileage requirements were ridiculously low and they were unwavering on increasing them. Even with a second and third car, I put like 13-14k on my daily here

Some people would like to have one car that can do everything, so currently EV don't work for them because maybe once a month they take a jaunt up to the mountains or to visit family. Having to buy a second car because your EV can't do everything you need is completely counterproductive.
