WLS: I have pix showing how to safely pry off the molding around the radio/Head Unit. No, don't mess with the HVAC knobs! The whole HVAC control module will come out with the molding, once you disconnect the wiring harness behind it. This is all covered on page 2 of my photo extravaganza, so fear not! The other 5 pages show/tell about popping off other cabin molding, routing the wires from front to the back, locating a spot on the hatch to drill for the camera, and hooking it all up.

Thanks for your patience.
No pressure -- you are doing this as a charity, big heartfelt thanks.

Well, I need a little pressure --otherwise it would always be half-finished! But you quite welcome, along with everyone here. I've learned a lot at NASIOC, or I'd never have been willing & able to do this job.

Unfortunately, it's now less than a half-hour before midnight on Saturday night, and I'm still working on it. So it looks like the new deadline is "sometime Sunday."

I've just finished with page 6, out of a projected 8 pages. So far I have 30 photographs notated, with maybe 6-8 pix more to go, plus some additional text.

Default Woops!

Time for another cop-out. It's Sunday evening, and I still have Page 8 plus all the proofreading and uploading to do. . . and there is a thunderstorm coming in off Lake Erie. So I'm shutting down the electronics for the night.

Maybe tomorrow?

I'm waiting till I understand for sure which cable I need. I looked into this a year ago when I found out that my premium head unit was capable of showing video. It seemed like a big project at the time but with a guide and the new cameras it should be doable. I'm sure the guide will be out this week. I've waited a year for it so I can be patient.

Hi, WLS.
If your HU looks like bobdole's, here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&postcount=103

--then write to SVXdc and he will send you the correct harness. IMO, you DO want the "6v camera power wire" add-on for an extra $2. see his webpage here:
http://ae64.com/Rear-camera-install-8p.htm
Believe me, this guy is super-helpful, and will advise you correctly. But he is busy, so at least get the ball rolling.

I'm still working on the Guide --I don't have many pix for the last page, so I think I'm just going to put links and some verbal descriptions for adjusting things after the camera is physically installed.

We were without internet service for about 24 hours Tues-Wed, and I spent most of Wednesday afternoon at my ISP tech support department. Obviously, their DSL server is back up & running now.

Thanks for the link! Yes that is my HU. I will order the cable with the 6 volt wire then. I plan on using the same camera as you use and recommend. I'm a little in the dark as to whether it comes with enough length of cable to run through the car up to the front. Thanks for your work on this project and take all the time you need. Thanks again. Bill

Plenty of cable from Rydeen to get to the back of the car. In fact I had about 3 feet more than I needed!

BTW: IT'S FINALLY DONE! I realize I've been promising this Guide for a while. See this new thread I started for any comments or questions:

Thanks again to all the giants whose shoulders I've stood on, the great info you gents have shared over many months in this current thread here.

As much as I thought this was a stupid feature, it would have really come in handy the last couple days, trying to back downhill between some trees for our camping spot...

Might have to look into this I guess

I had a similar opinion. My wife was the one who was hot to get a backup camera. While I was considering the (to my mind, extravagant) notion, I ran a test in a parking lot, and discovered that my Impreza had a blind spot almost 4 feet wide and something like 20 feet long for objects shorter than about 30 inches (tapering down with distance). Neither side mirror, nor the rearview mirror, nor me twisting my head around gave me the ability to see in this Mystery Zone.

That just wasn't acceptable safety for me.

I still use my mirrors, but the image on the screen from the camera fills in that Mystery Zone, so that I know exactly what's lying, sitting, or crawling there before I back over it!

I have to admit that I wanted it more than I thought I needed it, but once I began taking advantage of it I realized how much of an asset it is. Backing out of my kids driveway on a dark snowy night when the mirrors are nearly useless made it worth every penny. I guess, like everything else, you can get spoiled with goodies. Having said that, I do feel it helps with safety, especially if you have small children around to leave things in the driveway.

That info is on the first page of my Guide, here:
http://johnboice.com/bkupcam/

To skip the install guide and go direct to SVXdc's site, go here:
http://ae64.com/Rear-camera-8-pin.htm

Welcome to NASIOC, endleesss!

BTW, you will find an email address for SVXdc on his website, if you have any questions about the wiring harness he sells. If you have anything to discuss about info in my Installation Guide, there is a new thread for that here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2535338

Happy to report I got my harness. Talking with SVXdc he is very knowledgeable and an ease to work with. He even improved upon the original design of the harness. Now just waiting on the camera and then on to the install..

We never had any doubt, he's solid, just probably drowning in requests at this point.

Ditto what BrysImpreza sez.

Good luck on your install! Keep us posted on how it's going once your cam comes in.

Thank-you SilverBear for your excellent pictorial guide. A few weeks ago I loosely followed it for my own install, opting for a $30 (delivered!) camera from China that looks/acts identical to the Rydeen kits.

I did not get a response from SVXdc in time to use his connector, and so instead went the much cheaper route of just using a pair of square pin sockets to connect to the V+/V- pins at the back of the MFD. For power, I tapped into the reverse lights (BROWN wire w/YELLOW STRIPE, drivers side rear).

I also discovered an easy way to route the video cable to the rear of the MFD, without drilling or having to remove extra dash components. Just look left of the air ducts, and you'll find the MFD wiring harness as it snakes its own way to the rear of the MFD. I followed that route, pulling the video wire through the space using a 14g wire as a fish tape.

Some photos here: http://rtr.ca/subaru_mfd_camera/

More recently, one person posted that they fried their MFD doing this project with the pre-made connector. Dunno what that's all about, but do be careful guys. The fewer wires connecting to the MFD, the safer. Ideally just the video in (V+/V-) on pins 5,6.

UPDATE: Today I added an inline fuse holder and 1A fuse, between the power source (Reverse Lights) and the rest of the camera wiring. I feel that a 0.75A fuse would be even better, but I didn't have one on hand -- ordered some via eBay for delivery next month. The idea of the fuse is simple: if/when Something Bad Happens, the fuse might protect the rest of the vehicle's electronics from the problem.

Is the DUO plastic or metal? I'm thinking of using touchup paint maybe to match it to the car color instead of having it black... Thoughts?

Thanks

IIRC it is plastic. I don't see why not as far as painting it. Just be careful about the lens.

Thanks. For the people that have done this with the camera offset to the side of the license plate how bad is it when looking at the monitor? Is it barely noticeable or a big annoyance?

most head units will allow you to calibrate the lines to help with offset.

Being a "Sun-sign Virgo". . . it _bothered_ me that it wasn't _centered!_ But as GSXpess sez, you can adjust a bit, and after a few times using it, you don't really notice if it's an inch or two off.

I mean, the point is to NOT back over childen, cats. etc. It's not a precision bomb-sight!

I'm interested in getting a 8 pin harness from SVXdc.
I sent him an email on his website. http://ae64.com/Rear-camera-8-pin.htm

But I am getting no response.

can anyone direct me to another person who has this harness?

thanks
