Nowhere there's a plug for an OEM camera.
I might order a full rear liftgate cord, but it's twice as expensive.
Sorry you bought that (and thanks for taking the plunge and verifying it). So both of the harness part numbers I posted above do not include the camera socket. I'll talk to the parts guy who provided those, to see why.

ZURCALED12 figured out the part for a Crosstrek last week -- see his post here.

I suppose it's time for me to search the web for a fresher version of Subaru-Fast software.
The one I got has part numbers for '10-'13 euro-Forester, but if I enter those into USDM parts sites the results are confusing. Part number is 86273SC000 and it comes up both as a proper harness and as a rear washer hose

The camera part number is also different there (which may or may not be okay, since the part listed here is from an accessory catalog, not OEM-installed one), and says it's for a Clarion HU.

Sometimes it's for safety. I'm planning to install a backup cam in my Impreza because the previous owner put dark tint on the back and windows, which looks good but limits night visibility.

Question 2013 Impreza Ltd. backup cam retrofit

Hello all! As a NASIOC newb, let me thank everyone who has put time & effort into making such a GREAT thread.

We just traded in our 5-yr old Forester for an Impreza Limited 5-door. One option we felt we couldn't afford the dealer to install was a backup cam. Being a 60-yr old know-it-all, I assured my wife that with the help of the info you gents have posted [she emailed me the URL to the thread] I could fershur put in a backup camera for her.

We have the stock non-Nav HU, the CM631UD / PF-3391A-A [MR63], so my current understanding gives me this recipe for hours of fun:
1] Buy 8-pin cam harness from SVXdc.
2] Buy a camera & check it out on the HU before attempting surgery.
3] Drill out a mount/passthru in the underside of the hatch panel near the reg-plate lights.
4a] Run the video cable between SVXdc's vid connector and the camera.
4b] Ground SVXdc's spade connector to the HU's bracket screw.
5] Tap the cam's power leads into a 12v line someplace.

Please correct me if I seem deluded in any respect! You all make it seem pretty straightforward.

I have a few questions about what camera to buy, but I'll put that issue in a separate post.

Thanks again everyone, especially to SVXdc for the priceless tech specs, to ST Eye and BobDole888 for the detailed, clear pix of their installations, and to BrysImpreza for starting the thread & keeping it moving with valuable info about his install, and to nubsub for the HU's "secret access cam-adjustment" instructions!

Silver bear, that is spot on.

The hardest part is getting the wires through the rubber loom on the hatch into the car itself. Run it along the drivers side C pillar, UNDER the pivot point for the seat backs and under the rug along the side of the car, it just clips in and out of a plastic channel. Up the drivers kick sill and under the steering wheel to the radio.

As for a camera, opinions differ, but hindsight being 20/20, I would suggest the 1/4" post base type. You will only need to drill a hole, rather than Dremel.

These seem to be very popular.

I installed a cam in both my 2013 WRX, and the wife's 2013 Crosstrek. One thing I would add, I went with the Rydeen Duo as recommended by David. He likes this cam since it can be powered by the factory radio 6v output. I found it online for $99 shipped. Also figured if I'm gonna rip anything apart, not gonna use a cheap camera and have to replace it in 6months.

Here is a pic

Question Backup Camera Selection

Thanks for your prompt reply, BrysImpreza. It's reassuring to know that my hours of research at least have me pointed in the right direction.

@ bry03cobra: This is a good point about not wanting to have to do a reinstall; one that concerns me, too. Thanks for your input and the pic.

AT THIS POINT, I guess I have 2 main issues to consider:
1] Quality -- both q. of video image and q. of product's construction.
2] Power supply -- is it worth the extra $80 price difference between, say, a E366 [like BrysImpreza's link 2 posts above] and the Rydeen mini Duo to avoid having to tap into a 12v power line elsewhere?

I'd really like to hear from you folks who've installed an E366 and had it for a year or more. Are you still happy with it?

Anyone else with a Rydeen Duo operating at 6v? Any problems with that (as the specs cite 9-16v)?

The E366 is supposed to have 170 degrees of coverage, while the Rydeen has 150 degrees. Does anyone think that makes any practical difference?

Last question for now: Both the E366 and the Rydeen Duo use CMOS imaging technology. Does anyone have an opinion from experience on the comparative performance (for a backup camera, not for general video recording!) of a CMOS cam vs. a CCD cam?

Thanks,
--John AKA "SilverBear"

I have a sport premium without the 4.3"screen and Any one install an after market double din head unit with the back up camera? I'm debating trying to find an oem HU with s screen or just go aftermarket.

My suggestion was based on the style and cleanliness of install. Mine looks a little bulky, but it works well.
The $40 one I bought 1.5 years ago has held up well to massive New England snow, rain and road salt.
Quality is good, I'm not filming a movie, but I can tell what's behind me and about how far it is so I don't run it over

I do like the chrome finish, as well as the single, drilled hole installation aspect.
Your testimonial about 1.5 years in snow, slush & rain also means a lot. We live in the foothills of the Allegheny high country that runs along the Southern Tier of NY State and through Northern PA -- about an hour south of Buffalo. We get a lot of rain & snow off Lake Erie. Like you said "I'm not filming a movie." Getting into CCD tech is probably overkill, and other than the 6v feed issue during installation, I'm not certain that the Rydeen (which uses CMOS imaging, like the E366) is worth the extra $80.

Thanks again for the input, Brys* --I haven't heard back from SVXdc via email yet, so the more solid info I get before I have to make a purchase decision, the happier my indecisive soul will be!

Hey SilverBear, did you end up doing the install? I'm following your synopsis and looking at the Rydeen Duo. One thing that wasn't clear is whether you had to purchase additional video cables or other odds and ends to make this work. Looking forward to getting my rearview camera going... this thread is amazing -- thanks for all the install pics.

Greetings, Staytune.

Yes, I finally finished the installation, despite a week of brutally hot weather and limited shade in my driveway.

After some email correspondence with SVXdc and putting the issue to my wife (the one who was hot on getting the backup-cam in the first place) we decided to go with the Rydeen Duo, $99 inc. shipping from Al and Ed's Autosound.

The short version: IT IS NOT as hard a job as you fear, but neither is it as quick a job as you would hope!

The good news is that I have taken many digital pix at every step of the process, including a key to the correct wiring of the Rydeen Duo to SVXdc's 8-pin Harness WITH the extra power wire option he offers. I ran the photo of that past him, and he corrected me on all the particulars.

The bottom line: I am now --as we speak-- working on a Step-by-step Illustrated Tutorial on installing the Rydeen Duo backup cam in a 2013 Impreza Hatchback.

The only caveats:
  • This was done with the standard NON-Nav CM631UD / PF-3391A-A [MR63] Head Unit (audio screen). Any other HU is another issue.
  • You must order the 8-pin adapter harness from SVXdc WITH the extra power wire, or else mess with splicing into some other 6v or 12v constant power line.
But to answer your question directly: No other purchase is necessary --if you have a roll of electrical tape already in stock. Just SVXdc's harness & the stuff that comes in the Rydeen box will do it!

However, it is up to you if you are also comfortable just doing a twisted-wire splice with electrical tape insulating the joins. If you feel more secure soldering or using some other type of connector, that would be additional cost/effort, of course.

I am content with the security of the power splice from SVXdc's harness to the Rydeen wire --even though it's only twisted wire and E-tape, it sits behind the HU on the dash inside the car's passenger compartment. And the splice in the Green Wire to eliminate the Rydeen guide lines --(when activated, the Clarion HU has its own, adjustible backup guidelines) is also safe, tucked in a cut-out in the upper part of the rear hatch, near where the flexible cable loom joins the hatch's wiring to the main body of the car.

Should either connection corrode in later years, both are easy to reach & fix.

More details to come, once I get everything edited.

Hmmm. . . looks like the forum won't let me put up a picture.

I'll have to write it all up in HTML and put it on my website. I'll link back here --or start a new thread in this section as soon as I'm done.

Here is another way to try to show you:
go to this link
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bw3i...it?usp=sharing

and note that the extra length of wire --including the spliced green wires I mentioned-- are stuffed into the cut-out indicated by the red rectangle.

The letter "R" indicates the black wire from the Rydeen camera, which is mounted on the underside of the hatch-lift area designated as the location for factory camera installations.

Awesome, I'll wait for the guide -- looking forward to it. I emailed SVXdc to confirm the correct harness on his page SVXdc order page

So in your picture the wires are outside the paneling/hatch? Also just to be clear, the clarion HU you refer to is the standard NON-Nav CM631UD? That's what I currently have and it serves my purposes other than producing lots of buzzing noise when music player is plugged into aux jack.

When I installed mine on both the WRX and XV, I initially used wire nuts to make sure everything worked ok. Prior to putting everything back together I removed the wire nuts and soldered/heatshrinked the connections. Soldering the connections greatly improved the clarity of the pic.

Yes, I installed the Rydeen cam just fine with SVXdc's harness [WITH the extra power lead for $2 extra]. My Impreza has the standard NON-Nav CM631UD.

BTW, my own connection via USB of my MP3 player worked just fine, with no buzzing or anything from the Impreza Clarion sound system. I'm sorry to hear you're having a problem.

I apologise for taking so much time in getting my pix/guide ready and online. I'm disabled, and my energy/concentration "comes and goes." On the positive side: if an old gimp with one working leg and one good hand --with the left arm only partly functional-- can do this, then anyone with the time & willpower should be able to do it, too!

I think that is indeed the way to go, bry03cobra --I'm just not currently set up to solder. I believe I own a soldering iron, but I haven't seen it in about 15 years. . . it might have transmogrified into some other life form in some hidden corner of The Estate. . .

Thanks for info... it's not the USB, it's the aux connection. Haven't tried USB yet. Anyhow, got ahold of SVXdc and he directed me to the right harness. I'm gonna order all the parts, whenever you get around to the guide I'll be sure to follow it

That pic is after install is complete. It's a shot of the hatch door raised. The "R" is the wire coming from the cam. The connection between the cam lead and the lo-on-ng wire from front to rear is tucked into the hatch frame cut-out as pictured. The long lead from the HU that goes all the way back through the length of the car comes into the hatch via that black flex tube that contains other wiring. When the hatch "molding" or "upholstery" or whatever you call it is replaced, you don't see that detail.

All will --I hope-- be more clear when I get my horse in gear. . .

Sorry for the confusion. The Aux connection is a 3.5 mm stereo jack, right?

I'm not sure I have a portable player of any type I can test that with. . . unless I run a male-to-male patch cord between my mp3 player's headphone jack and the Aux port. I'll try to remember to look for that cord [which I think I have somewhere!] and try that out, just to give you some idea of whether it's a problem with your rig or if that's a common problem.

Yes please let us know when this is ready. One of the things holding me back from doing this is I don't know how to remove the front plastic to get at the radio. I am terrified of breaking/cracking it since I don't know where the pressure points are to lift it off and I have read it is $80 to replace a broken one.. Do the HVAC knobs have to be removed too? I've tried pulling them off and they don't want to come out.
Thanks for your help!

Yeah it is a 3.5 mm male to male... just makes it so anyone w/a phone could play their music in my car without unpairing my phone and pairing theirs to bluetooth.

I've tried pulling them off and they don't want to come out.
Thanks for your help!
I apologize again for being so slow.
But I have actually been working on it all afternoon today, and so I hope it'll be up tomorrow (Saturday) sometime.

WLS: I have pix showing how to safely pry off the molding around the radio/Head Unit. No, don't mess with the HVAC knobs! The whole HVAC control module will come out with the molding, once you disconnect the wiring harness behind it. This is all covered on page 2 of my photo extravaganza, so fear not! The other 5 pages show/tell about popping off other cabin molding, routing the wires from front to the back, locating a spot on the hatch to drill for the camera, and hooking it all up.

Thanks for your patience.
