If you mean ignition on, then it's possible the switch is bad. |

When the car is running, with the headlamps off, there is power being fed to them. Subaru uses a switched ground system to control the headlamps. Although off, there is power running through this circuit (red wire with green stripe) and it feeds the fog-lamp relay and switch. The relay so you can of course turn the lamps on and the switch so that when its turned on, the little green indicator lamp illuminates. If for any reason you simply tap into the red wire with the green stripe and not fully disengage it from the relay (whether unlock or cut) you will effectively feed power backwards into the headlamp system, which will cause problems such as blowing fuses. |

Need help with finding the correct high beam wire
I apologize to the OP for being slightly off-topic...
I have a 2002 WRX wagon, and have a pair of PIAA aftermarket driving lamps that I want to hook up to come on only when my high beams are activated by the stalk. I need to know exactly which wire I need to tap into to do this. I don't want to tap into the wrong one, and mess up my wiring enough to trip any fuses. My kit came with a wiring harness with its' own dashboard-mountable switch, and a "vampire clip", as I've seen it called on other threads here, to tap into a high beam wire. Can you help me out with identifying the correct wire, (please be as specific as possible in your description). Better yet, photography of this wire would be really appreciated! Thanks so much everyone. Last edited by jonnieoh; 09-24-2012 at 03:33 PM. |

Bump.
Can anyone help a guy out, please? "You're looking for the ______ wire with the ______ stripe, located in the ____________________." Please fill in the blanks for me. |

I'll look at the schematics this weekend.
In general, I will figure-out how to wire the switch so that when you turn the lamps on, they will only turn-on with the high-beams, and when you turn the car off, the lamps and switch will be dead; no possibility of any power-drain, whether the car is off or you have the key in the accessory position. |

not finished quite yet...
Hi all,
I followed the DIY, and was able to wire up my fog lamps so they can turn on with the low beams and the high beams. That is great! Thanks for that worthwhile mod. BUT... I also have my driving lamps installed, and they "work", but not the way I was hoping... Like most driving lamp kits, they have their own dashboard-mounted, wired switch. They can currently be turned on or off via this switch, whether I have the low beams on, or the high beams on. It doesn't matter. This isn't ideal. Obviously, I'd really prefer that the driving lamps just come on automatically when I activate my high beams, (via the steering wheel-mounted stalk). Said another way, I want to push the stalk forward to turn on the high beams, and at the same time, have the driving lamps automatically come on. Consequently, when I pull the stalk back to turn on the low beams, I want the driving lamps to turn off automatically. All of this should happen without having to touch the switch for the driving lamps at all. Does that make sense? So, WHAT WIRE DO I TAP INTO TO DO THIS, EXACTLY?:c onfused: Currently, (having done the foglight mod), I've made a bridge between the orange wire in the fuse panel, to the red/green wire in the fog light relay. This bridge is currently where I've also connected my driving lamp wire. Can anyone please help me? I cannot fathom that I'm the very first person to hook up driving lamps so that they work with the high beams on a 2002 WRX... Somebody has to have this answer out there in cyberspace! Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope... |

The RED wire is the switched ground for your high-beams. So your relay would pick up (turn on) when your headlights were turned on. Connect the other wire to one side of your driving light switch. Connect the other side of your driving light switch to the GREEN WITH A WHITE STRIPE. This will make sure your driving lights are off when your ignition is off. I'm not sure where the high-beam relay is located. Plus I'd like for someone to verify my thinking before anyone follows my suggestion. Also I hope someone can write this up more clearly. The large Green wire is from your ignition switch which turns on the ignition relay. The G/W wire is controlled by your ignition relay. Connecting to it gives more isolation from the rest of your system. Either should work. You'll hook your driving lights from the driving light relay contacts to ground. Thanks CalvinT,
I feel like you've gotten me 90% of the way there, and with someone else's confirmation, I'd be in pretty good shape. |

You got me thinking. I've been wanting both fogs and driving lights for some time. Which PIAA lights did you get and where/how are you mounting them? I'll be installing Hella fog lights in the stock location.

I just did the fog light relay conversion. I have a 2002 WRX. All my comments about fuse location and function are for a 2002 WRX. Your mileage may vary.
I cut both the RED WIRE WITH GREEN STRIPE (RG) that goes to the foglight relay and the RG wire that goes to the foglight switch. I folded back and taped off the car side of both RG wires so they wouldn't short out later. I then connected the both RG wire from the switch and the RG wire from the relay to the GREEN (G) wire that goes to the ignition relay. It's the bottom relay in the relay block. (I should have used the GW wire, see warning about fuses below) I could have used the GREEN WIRE WITH WHITE STRIPE (GW) wire but decided not to. There is no functional difference in using either the GREEN wire or GW wire if you get a good connection. (Again, see warning below) The vampire clips I used were for 18-14 gauge wire. The GW wire seemed smaller than 18 gauge. The RG wires are 18 gauge. The GREEN wire seems to be either 14 or 16 gauge. You won't get a good connection if you use a vampire clip with smaller wire than it's rated for. That could be one reason people had trouble when they tried connecting to the GW wire. I left the ground connection to the switch stock. This allows me to use my fog lights the way I want and not the way the Government wants. Now I can turn my fog lights on anytime the ignition is on. The indicator light comes on when the fog lights are on. If I turn on my high beam the fog lights go off. They also go off if I flash someone. My next step is to connect a switch so i can turn off my Daytime Running Lights when I want. I disabled them, then realized they made me more noticeable, meaning someone is less likely to pull out in front of me. But i don't want them on if it's foggy. ****** WARNING ****** Be aware that the GREEN wire has a 50 A fuse (SBF-4 in the main fuse box) protecting it and the GW wire has a 15A fuse (No 5 in the main fuse box) protecting it. This means if you connect to the GREEN wire and the wiring you added later has a short to ground you may melt a wire and have a fire. If you connect to the GW wire and have a short you should be safe. Having written that. I'll be moving my vampire clip tomorrow. I didn't fully research this until I decided to do this writeup. |

Can someone put a picture up or say which wire they tapped into for power for a 2007 STi?I'm using the same clip everyone's finding the orange wire from but don't see an orange wire? I was doing this and being that I have little to no electrical skill I had no idea which wire to grab power from... Thanks.

I'm confused. Where did the yellow wire that was installed with the vampire connector end up going to.
Thanks |
