16 gauge copper with white jacket speaker wire from radio shack...

Cheap and effective...

like i said above... that won't be a full featured hdmi receiver

it most likely won't upconvert signals to hdmi to allow 1 cable to the tv and won't deal with audio...

I'm looking for a good receiver that'll convert all inbound signals to outbound HDMI with 1080p support for <$500. Any thoughts?

looks like it does, and I like onkyo (except for the receiver that came with my OT recommended HTIB setup that blew its power supply after 2 years).

Looks like the 605 is actually a step down from the onkyo i have now, but hte onkyo I have now won't do analog-digital conversion for hdmi output. The 705 looks like it adds some functionality an additional hdmi input for $100 more, I'm not sure 2 HDMI inputs on the 605 will be sufficient for the end state of my gear. Then again, in the end state im going to need 4 hdmi inputs and that isn't even going to be possible...

I'm really holding out until I can stomach dropping $1350-1500 on the Denon AVR-3808CI...

yeah I just saw that the 605 is 399.99 at bhphotovideo.... hmmm... Still, I don't think 2 HDMI inputs is going to cut it for me for any longer then 3-6 months.

only hd dvd and blu-ray require hdmi audio right now, so other things can go straight to the TV or via component...

naw, they still have outputs for bare bone RCA audio. You just can't enjoy the new formats like DTS HD, TrueHD, etc. without HDMI

Ok, but Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 are still available to standard digital outputs.

yessir, and from what Danz said I believe you can still get TrueHD and DTS HD downconverted via digital audio.

screw that, I can already duplicate the same functionality by inputing to my tv and my receiver. I'm trying to simplify my video switching

yeah, as I stated in the post just above this, the whole thing im trying to do is eliminate cable clutter by replacing all my component gear that I can with hdmi and the stuff I can't via an analog to digital converting receiver. I have WAYYY too many cables right now with 4 component video sources and one hdmi source.
