I've been a 911 fan forever, having come this close (fingers really close) to buying various air cooled ones back when they were just out of reach of a practical engineer. In any case, to me, 911's are out of reach for what I'm willing to pay so I started looking at the Cayman. Yes, I've watched the everyday driver thing and Doug's review and read the motor trend article. I also am a LM fan, having gone to numerous races at Lime Rock and note that the 911 racecars are, in my mind a rebodied Cayman with the engine in front of the axle supposedly for aerodynamics......uh, ok.

A new GT4 is more money than I want to spend. I've owned an Elise, and my son owns an S2000. I'm looking for something more refined and less track oriented. Manual is required or why bother? The 4 turbo vs 6 are questions in my mind. 981 vs 718. Residual value in the future is important as I can't say any car would ever be a forever car for me. So practically, thinking perhaps 981 GTS vs 718 base. This will be a street only car. Maybe a lapping day now and then but not getting back into roadracing.

Are there things I'm overlooking? I have not yet driven a Cayman. Have driven various 911's in the past.

The cayman/boxster is such a good car The 718 has a slight bump in power and if I remember correctly the base 718 is as fast as the 981 S. That said IMO part of the driving experience is having that 6 cyl behind you.

The interiors are almost identical. The 718 got some minor exterior updates. I haven't spent anytime in a 718 but plenty of time in a 981 S (got to run around in it a couple weeks ago) I would stick with the 981 purely for the 6 cyl.

My parents road trip their 981 all around Florida very comfortable and I would think you will find it the perfect blend of a purpose built car that has all the luxuries for the street. Looking at 981 values I am pretty sure it could be sold for more that it was purchased for 2 years ago. I don't know if 718 values will stay as strong as people want the 6 cyl. There is a reason why Porsche has the Cayman and Boxster GTS 4.0 out now.

Go test drive both but I would go 981 GTS.

Edit - One last note. I have driven a PDK Macan and it was as good as everyone says they are but I haven't driven it in the 981. The MT in the 981 is almost perfect at least in street application. Its smooth, the ratios seem spot on. I am sure in a 911 Turbo S you would want a PDK but I would absolutely want an MT in the 981.
