The bolded part is the reason why I'm uncertain. Supposedly, in the interests of fielding less questions about the a/c, the Subaru engineers decided not to turn the a/c light on when in defrost mode.

In any case, it should (hopefully) be apparent whether or not the tip works when I try it next time it gets steamy in my car...
I actually don't notice a HELL of a lot of fuel consumption with AC. I notice having to put extra load and all, but maybe I am just unconsciously compensating with my foot. At the end of the day, people's input can change the mileage by a huge factor.

I'm pretty sure in my car, unless I have the fan speed/vent selector at AUTO climate control, the A/C light will come on. But either way, the fix is to cycle the light to come on and then off to manually turn off A/C. Good luck
